yelp 2.0 for Android

Yelp has brought their 2.0 Android client to the Market, and it has some very nice features in tow.  You can now check in to the places Yelp helps you find, and use "monocle" (an augmented virtual reality layer of sorts) to help you find them.  These two features were sorely missed in the previous versions of the Android client.

Check-ins are fairly self explanatory, but let me explain monocle to you a bit.  You activate it from the Yelp main screen (pictured above), and it uses the camera, GPS and compass in your Android phone to overlay locations on the real-world view you see through the lens.  Perfect for day trips spent walking through an unfamiliar town, or for just goofing around.  Check out a screenshot or two after the break, as well as the download links. (Yelp is for all versions of Android -- kudos the the developers for that!) Thanks willxcore!

Yelp 2.0 brings monocle and checkins to its Android client

Monocle kills my camera every single time I use it and I have to reboot the phone.

Sprint Hero - a Darch custom ROM... I blame this really, but I figured that it needed to be posted still.

Weird - I got a "spam" rating for that comment? That's odd... Cuz I was actually trying to be very concise and just alert the community here of a potential problem...

I'll elaborate a little then: I absolutely LOVE the monacle feature and I absolutely couldn't wait for it to come to the Android version of the app. I was so excited to use it yesterday, and then I found later in the day that I couldn't use my camera... I'm so bummed about it that I'm thinking of reverting back to stock - seriously!

I love Yelp's app and I would love to have the monacle feature working. But the rest of what Yelp offers here is so good it's really not a deal-breaker for anybody.

Doesn't exist in Market on my phone. Is this a paid app? Only USA users can see paid apps. Would be nice if mentioned.

It's free. The links to Appbrain or the market don't work for you? What about scanning the barcode?

I get the reply: "There are no matches in Android Market for the search: pname:"

If I search for it in Appbrain it is listed, but if I click on it I get "Not found. The requested item could not be found.".

I had the same issue with "Where." When I asked the Where support, I was told that AT&T did not allow Where onto their devices. So what I had to do was install the APK manually (on a Nexus One, so AT&T's sideloading restriction didn't affect me).

Another option I since thought of: turn on Flight mode, then re-enable (ONLY) wi-fi. Search the market or AppBrain then. Carrier restrictions on Apps in "their market" can't stop you then.

Looks like a combination of Google Maps and Foursquare. Nice "wow" factor but I don't think it's something I'd use on a regular basis.

This isn't the first time they have been accused of extortion.

Its a bad service, and anyone who uses it is an enabler. There are others. Just say no.

Personally I don't find the checkins self explanitory at all. What precisely happens when I check in? And why does it need my email address to checkin? How much spam comes from that?

DO NOT update if you have the previous version. It used to bring up very relevant searches. Now it wil being up everything BUT what you asked it to. I would love to be able to have the old version back. Until then, it will remain uninstalled.
