Sony Xperia Tablet Z

Rumored specs include Snapdragon 800, 10.1-inch 1920x1200 display, waterproof design

A full year after the last one, we could soon see the launch of a new Android-powered Sony tablet. Serial leaker @evleaks says the device will pack a 2.3GHz Snapdragon 800 processor, 3GB of RAM and a 10.1-inch 1920x1200 "Triluminos" display. Other notables are said to include 16GB of storage, expandable via microSD, 8MP and 2MP cameras, and a 6,000mAh battery. Like its predecessor, the Xperia Tablet Z, the new slate will apparently be super-thin, measuring just 6.6mm (down from the original's 6.9mm) and boast waterproof credentials; on the software side Android 4.4 KitKat is reported.

That's mostly standard high-end Android tablet fare, but the decision to remain at 1920x1200 resolution may raise eyebrows when rivals like Samsung are pushing to the dizzying heights of 2560x1600.

Though it's not explicitly mentioned, it's likely the Xperia Tablet Z2 could debut at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona next week. MWC was the venue for last year's Tablet Z unveiling, and this year we're also expecting to find out what's next from Sony in the smartphone space.

Update: @evleaks has now shared what is claimed to be a promotional render of the new tablet showing the KitKat UI and a something reminiscent of the original Tablet Z. You'll find it after the break.

Sony Xperia Tablet Z2 tipped for MWC [update: now with image]

Looks like it could be a nice tablet with those specs. Not particularly worried about the "low" resolution screen, but I expect the price won't be anything to laugh about. I'm getting pretty bored waiting for the new Nexus 10, so this might be a contender.

Agreed - if the next Nexus 10 isn't announced at MWC, then I'll look to a different 10.1 tablet too and the Sony looks nice. The lower resolution is not a concern for me either. I'd rather have a full day's battery life, with a fast and smooth UI than a tablet that struggles with a resolution that's 'too high'.

Unfortunately now that Samsung have gone with the ultra hi-res, the Nexus 10 2 can't really go back. It'll have to have a bigger, heavier battery instead or risk being 'not as good' as the older one.

I have had this tablet since launch and everything about it is great it's light, great battery life and is still super fast.

With zero hardware leaks or mystery FCC filings, I sincerely doubt there'll be a Nexus 10 announcement anytime soon, let alone at MWC. Still placing my bets on Google I/O.

I'm not sure what the use for upgrading my tablet would be. Like many, mine is perfect for Netflix in bed as it is.

I'm kind of with you here. The only thing suffering about my Nexus 10 is the crappy battery life, and while that's annoying, I don't see myself getting a new tablet until it stops functioning or something radical and new comes out.

Looks as though it may be a decent tablet but so many cheaper alternatives. I know I don't know the price but It won't be cheap.

Will keep the spec whores happy though :-)

It last longer than you think but it could be better, I would rather have seen them keep the same thickness and make it a bigger battery.

Sony had a chance to step up their game with the new Xperia Z tablet. 1200p resolution? 16GB internal? Just no. Tablets are beyond 1080p now and I'd expect 32GB minimum but would prefer 64GB or even 128GB as options. Toss in a cellular modem option I'd be good with that personally. Sony stunned me with the Xperia Z/Z1/Z Ultra phone comeback and I did like the thin design of the Z tablet and the waterproofing.

So then the screen must be bad??

I was excited about a new xperia tablet, but a little disappointed that the battery is so small. And of course the internal memory 16gb, no way!

And yet the screen on the current Tablet Z is much nicer looking, even at the "lower resolution". Pixels are a big part, but only part, of the story.

Here's an idea, don't worry about following Samsung's stupefying resolution and ridiculous pricing, MSRP this at $450 and sell a shit-ton of them.

For someone who uses his tablet a lot for cooking I would love this. I'm just one accident away from no tablet at all.

Would love a 8 inch Sony tablet. I had a 10 inch tablet and the form factor was good for watching movies but doing anything else just felt clumsy.

Definitely looking forward to this tablet. Even though the original Tablet Z still hangs with most of the new tablet releases. Sony is starting to replace most of my Samsung tech.

16gb nowadays?? If only the free area was 16gb, but it is only 10-11gb.. Today they should start with a 32 gb storage. It doesnt cost so much more. I will skip all the device with a 16gb storage. I have a 16gb storage in my Note 10.1 and Im always near empty and need to remove apps etc. So seriously? A tablet with a 16gb storage nowadays?

It's funny my Xoom came with 32gb and high end tablets still come with less today. My G Pad has 16gb but I don't think any smaller tablets come with more right now, not counting Kindle, nooks or iPad minis.

I've had the XTZ since June '13; and it's been a great tablet. The waterproofing is the biggest selling point; at least for me. It's been through several waterparks and the most bewildering stares using it in the water.
Software updates has been pretty good as well. Since I got it (4.1 I think), it's been upgraded a couple of times already (now 4.3). And Sony has confirmed 4.4 support in the tablet z's roadmap.
My only qualm with the tablet is the weak camera & no LED for the flash. Wish Sony would treat the tablet like their flagship phone, using the best available camera tech.

I'm one of those people that does not like the who skinny is better thing going on with phones and stuff. But looks nice, albeit to angular

I'd rather get this then the PRO tabs. Samsung still has yet to prove itself with updates (on tablets). Sony has already done that (on tablets),

I really like the looks and build quality of these Sony Tablets. I would really like to see Sony and Google also release this new Z2 in a Google Play Edition. If they did I would really think about picking it up, I'm really getting impatience waiting for Google to announce the new Nexus 10! I'm 100% pure vanilla Android!! No Skins!!!!

Yeah. Also our icon is the same.

Well there are CyanogenMOD builds for the original Xperia Z Tablet for both the Wifi and LTE versions. So if there is no GPe edition coming for the Z2 tablet I'd imagine CyanogeMod will put out ROMS for the said Z2.

If anything, I'd call that an old picture. The battery icon is green and Sony has been using the white icons per Google's new guidelines like every other manufacturer.

This may be my next tablet. Although I seriously don't think we will be a tablet culture in five years. I'm more of the thought of the movie "Her" minus the love affair.

I actually welcome the 1920x1200 resolution. I have a Asus tf701 which has the ultra hd. The extra resolution is not that useful. The highest resolution for movies is 1920 anyway. I'm sure the extra resolution drains more battery. I also welcome the light weight and thinness even at the expense of a larger battery. I don't mind charging more often. Less weight and easier to hold are more important.
