Nexus update

Some owners of the GSM Samsung Galaxy Nexus are finding out that they have a new update waiting for them this morning, albeit a minor one. The latest update for Google's flagship phone leaves the device on Android 4.0.4, but ups the build number to IMM76I, from the older IMM76D. As for what's actually new, some GNex owners are reporting that this fixes the intermittent signal loss issue that'd been affecting some on IMM76D, as well as remedying smaller issues like occasional lock screen lag when using automatic brightness. (Be sure to let us know in the comments if you notice any other changes on your Nexus after applying the update.)

And for any neckbeards out there keeping track of technical stuff, it seems the new software leaves the phone's baseband as it was, while including a fresh kernel built last Friday.

The update should be pushed out to GSM Galaxy Nexus owners over the next few weeks, if earlier release patterns are anything to go by. If you want to manually update (and have the "yakju" variant of the Galaxy Nexus), you can follow our usual instructions to do so, swapping out the old OTA URL for this link right here.

Thanks, Scott!

Honestly Google and Samsung make me sick. I purchased a Galaxy Nexus so that I could receive timely updates. Unfortunately I received "yakjuzs" build. It is complete BS that Google allows this to happen. This phone is supposed to be vanilla and updated immediately and the developer reference phone. It's a terrible joke. I am stuck on 4.02.

So now it has become not only do I need to buy a Galaxy Nexus product but in the future need to see what build it is before I buy it because if it's not the right build then it doesn't get updated.

And the worst part of this is that I switched from HTC to Nexus so that I would get updates and now I find out that I do not receive updates.

If the iphone ever has a larger screen I might go back. Google continues to completely mishandle this. I mean this is a reference phone....

Google get off your a** and do something for those of us that are trying to experience your software vanilla....

here is the link to the stock image for the gsm galaxy nexus 4.0.4 https://dl.google.com/dl/android/aosp/yakju-imm76d-factory-c6e807a1.tgz and install that on your phone so you receive updates directly from google. look for the simple solution rather than complaining, it is not google's fault for some of the phones running a variation of the vanilla rom but samsung who is responsible for the factory image installed on the phone.

Exactly. It's an easy fix and there are numerous step-by-step guides to accomplish turning your non yakju device into a yakju device.

I know I could convert my phone but I was hoping to not root and install custom roms as to not void the warranty... I was honestly just trying to stay vanilla... As for Google - they cut the deal with Samsung to jointly develop the phone. Contractually they could have stipulated that all phones have the same software. I mean it is their software. And they chose Samsung to develop the Nexus device. So to me the fault lies directly with Google...

Flyer00 says:

You shouldn't have to root your phone to get on a build that updates. This shit should just work. There shouldn't be a Samsung build, Google build, Veri$on build, Sprint build, etc. There should be ONE that works on all. I prefer Android over Apple, but this is one of the things Apple does right. You don't have to screw around, dig through wikis, risk bricking your phone just to get software fixes. This is why iPhone is still popular and Android hasn't dominated yet.

usualsuspect says:

btw - if I decide to install this - do you have directions of how to do this?

Mikok655 says:

I had the Yakjuxw nexus and flashed the regular Yakju a couple of weeks ago. Everything was fine until today I received the OTA and as it restarted there was a triangle with an exclamation point. When i saw the details it says something like"failed to verify whole-file signature" and "signature verification failed installation abborted". Anyone know what might be going on???

aaltaf22 says:

Im having the same problem. Converted my yakjuzs to yakju a week ago. No idea whats going wrong. I ended doing the manual way by installing cwm recovery. I dont understand the need to install a custom recovery to manually update. Never had to go through that on my nexus s

steveomac says:

I'm gonna assume that you have a CDMA version of the galaxy nexus.

and I'm with you, it is horse shit that the CDMA version is being left in the dust while the GSM version is getting all the updates.

You can't blame google or samsung tho, you blame verizon for the lack of updates.

verizon is making the phone a 2 update phone, 2 updates and then you move on to another phone.

The other thing that pisses me off is that even the dev for the GSM are leaving the CDMA nexus in the dust, I can't tell you how many roms I wanna try and I can't cause they are GSM not CDMA

thanks verizon for fucking your customers over.

daveloft says:

There's a simple fix, stop buying CDMA phones! Import a GSM Galaxy Nexus and use it on AT&T or T-Mobile, if you want faster speeds, get an LTE MyFi.

That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard......a mifi for your phone? Please stop.

not sure why you got the "yakjuzs" build (never heard of it before). I got Galaxy Nexus and I have received all the updates since release. Maybe the provider adds it?

It works and with takju you might be among the first to get the new JB ;)

get the galaxy nexus toolkit, you'll be done in 5 to 8 minutes tops, i already did it 4 times to 4 different galaxy nexus devices including mine... i used windows 7...and presto

kyo171 says:

applied this to my rooted 4.0.4 Gnex yakju from CWM on my phone, and its gives me an < assert failed: getprop("ro.product.device") == "maguro" I I get prop
("ro.build.product") == "maguro" > error. What could be the problem? its a GSM btw

Alex Dobie says:

For some reason your GSM Nexus isn't identifying itself as a GSM Nexus (maguro is the codename for the international GSM version). Maybe due to mods or something that you've flashed on top of 4.0.4? Or if you're running a 4.0.4 ROM based on the earlier Verizon Galaxy Nexus IMM30B leak, that'd do it.

kyo171 says:

i checked my buildprop with terminal emulator and under product.build and product.device, its both maguro, i flashed the stock 4.0.4 factory image from the google nexus factory image site and rooted it with recovery as CWM 5504. So i think it shld be a stock GSM image of 4.0.4 GSM. and yet the assert failed status 7 error comes out, weird

kyo171 says:

Ah i found the problem, i was using a clockworkmod version 5504 which was a CDMA clockwork mod, i shld have been using a GSM clockworkmod, i am so stupid.

And so for future user who enocunter the same problem as me, check your clockworkmod version if u encounter my problem...let my stupidity be a lesson for everyone else.

I almost rather Google never release updates or do so that it is in such an untimely that so people would stop complaining. Seriously, if It's that big of a deal just root and flash. And moving to iphone will not change the fact android is a completely different os. Just because your phone doesn't have the latest numbers on it doesn't mean it's bad.

This isn't about different operating systems. People who complain are giving just due to Apple's superior update process. Which Google should be able to duplicate on Nexus devices. However it seems for some reason they can't.

I upgraded from 4.0.2 to 4.0.4 today (first to IMM76D and then IMM76I). No issues so far.

jeffreytz says:

Yeah I just happened to upgrade from 4.0.2 to 4.0.4 yesterday because I finally got my desk dock and its useless with 4.0.2. So unlocked the bootloader (wipe! You were right Phil, should have done it when I bought it ...) upgraded, all A-OK. Was surprised to see the 4.0.4 OTA upgrade show up today since I couldn't get the first 4.0.2 to 4.0.4 upgrade to show up OTA at all, but I guess there are fewer phones on 4.0.4 so they pushed it to all of them at once (?). Anyway, all is working well.

Why would people still buy CDMA phones. I love my nexus on T-Mobile!!

Premium1 says:

Because verizon coverage +lte>>>> tmo faux 4g

JEvoUser says:

Let's see ah, better coverage and blazing fast LTE. I would prefer not to root my new nexus and retain warranty as well as official support from Google. I don't care about the version number right now I just want my service not to go to sleep 50 million times a day. Talking to you Verizon!!!

steveomac says:

why are people getting pissed at people who have verizon, I don't wanna switch cause I don't wanna pay the 400$ to leave my contract, and i don't wanna pay more for a cap data plan when i'm grandfathered in to the unlimited.

if you guys wanna pay it for me go right ahead

MAC USERS: For those looking to upgrade to 4.0.4 IMM76D so that you will receive this update OTA, I've written a tutorial you can find here: http://digitaligloo.wordpress.com/2012/04/20/guide-update-your-galaxy-ne...

I never understand why some one buys a beta/devolper phone. Its meant to root unlock and flash. This what PO me about selling to the general pubic. They don't understand the power they hold.

redmanalishi says:

You are grossly misinformed. The Nexus is a mass market phone. It is not meant to be rooted or unlocked. It's value to devs is that it allows app developers to make their wares compatible with ICS, and it lets manufacturers to get up to speed on porting ICS to their own hardware. It is a common fallacy among hackers that Google builds the Nexus just for them to play with. This is quite silly.

Nice to know there is a new update when I havent even received the update for 4.0.4 :-( and yes I am on the Yakju build. *sigh* still have to play the waiting game I guess....

dbareis says:

I think its pretty bad to get an update to 4.0.4 to bring it up to 4.0.4, think someone needs to work on their versioning.

Can I put the Yakju build on my Verizon Galaxy Nexus? Will there be any problems?

killaaj says:

you cant, your phone isnt gsm
