except that you can't... bootloader is still locked down, and there's no recovery. just got towelroot, so you can at least get the playstore working

still a good price though. if you have Amazon Prime, jump all over it

Not sure why you'd do that anyway. The best thing about this are the Amazon specific services. Like that you can download (not stream) certain prime instant videos. That's awesome. Or access to the prime lending library.
Plenty of other well specced and priced Android tablets out there.

with the exception of being able to download the Prime shows, there's nothing about FIre OS and its limited app store i like

Not worth it. For tablets, need to get a Google experience device for updates direct from Google. I'd rather pay extra for an ipad than get this kindle for the updates. The kindle interface decreases the functionality of what android offers.

Meh still too expensive without Google ecosystem, may be if its below $200 I can just use it as a spare once in a while.

The old man has a kindle fire. It works well for him. It has a couple of features that would be nice to have on traditional android tablets.

eh...haters gonna hate.

Haters hating. I never thought I would go to a Kindle Fire HDX after having both an Acer and an Asus Android tablet. Then I did and I couldn't be happier. The battery life is great, the interface fast, and I can access all Amazon services (I already use) on the device. In a pinch I even use it for WebEx meetings at work.

For apps not in the Amazon App store, I use Android Drawer or I use the 1 Mobile App store. Simple side load (without root) of a few apps and I can run pretty much anything but the Google Play services apps. I can't think of any apps I had to re-buy for the Kindle from Google Play either. Would I love to have the GMail app and Play Store, sure. It isn't hurting my use of the device.

While this isn't a selling point, the Origami case is pretty awesome. Anyone that sees it thinks it is pretty cool.

I guess I went from rooting and ROMing to having a device that just works.

Yep, this is very nice tablet. If you use Prime, it's a must have at this price. I think most of the haters have probably never even seen the HDX.

No. It's a neutered Android tablet. I won't buy one on principle. I actually bought an iPad instead of this so I could watch Amazon Instant Video on a tablet. (Obviously I use the iPad for a few other things as well, or that would be dumb.)

And the iPad is not an Android tablet at all. Comments like this make no sense. The HDX is an Amazon tablet...the iPad is an Apple tablet...the Nexus 7 and 10 are Google tablets. I have one of each. All different and all very nice in their respective niches. I don't get the whole fanboy thing...for any tech. But, to each his own.

Regardless of your opinion of the HDX, I think the article is misleading. Today you can get an HDX 8.9 w/16 gb memory for $314 (w/the commercials). The wifi model w/64 gb goes for $419. On the HDX product page, in parentheses, it even says "You save: $60.00." I don't know where the writer gets $130.
